Tim Howes and Eric Vishria. The project is backed by Netscape founderMarc Andreessen.[2] RockMelt integrates a technique for surfing the web that focuses on Google Search and social media, in particular Facebook and Twitter.[3]
The browser was launched in private beta on November 8, 2010[4] and now it is in the public version beta. Until March 2011, users were required to connect their Facebook account to the website in order to download it.[5] RockMelt supports Windows and Mac OS X platforms.
RockMelt is based on Google's open-source project Chromium, now on version 16. This is a cross-platform family of browsers (available for Windows, Mac, and Linux) that use the open-source web layout engine WebKit[6]—jointly built by Apple, Google, and the open-source community—but have the JavaScript engine replaced by Google's own V8, also open-source.

Notable features
Rockmelt has an optional Facebook sidebar for efficient communication with contacts. The sidebar also updates Facebook statuses and allows you to view your Facebook notifications. Rockmelt also integrates Twitter. Searching Google in the search bar pops-up a small drop down window with search results.[7] Among the more recent additions to features included in Rockmelt are:
- "Quiet Mode", that stops notifications and closes the sidebars
- Omnibox search turns up Facebook friends, with options to open up profiles, send messages or make wall posts.
